Reducing Food Loss and Waste Through Science, Innovation and Collaboration
To mark the United Nations International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, André reflected on the importance of reducing food waste and protecting the precious resources, energy and effort involved in food production.
Food loss and waste remain significant global challenges, with implications for sustainability, resource efficiency and the resilience of food systems. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration across the food value chain, alongside continued innovation and a deeper understanding of how food quality can be preserved from farm to fork.
Science and expertise have an important role to play in supporting this progress. Through advances in food testing and quality assurance, organisations can better understand the factors that influence food quality and shelf life, helping to identify opportunities to reduce avoidable waste.
Reflecting on the contribution of Intertek, André highlighted the work of the company’s food experts, whose expertise in areas such as shelf-life testing supports a better understanding of food quality and contributes to wider efforts to reduce food loss and waste.
For André, achieving meaningful progress requires bringing together scientific expertise, innovation and collaboration across the entire food value chain. While significant challenges remain, continued collective action will be essential to reducing avoidable waste and building a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
